Matter magazine has published the results of a project driven by scientists at the ETH Zurich to turn wood flooring into an energy source. The secret has been to make a parquet with two layers of wood and place some electrodes in the middle. When people walk on parquet the electrodes vibrate and friction electricity is generated. The result of the project shows that only with this system could the energy demanded by the LED lights of the room where it is installed could be supplied. 
The initial goal of the study was to demonstrate that wood can be modified with environmentally friendly procedures to make triboelectric power. However, the results have been so positive that the most appropriate woods for scaling the product at the industrial level are being analyzed.
